Elbow pain with Racket Sports
Elbow pain with racket sports is something we see patients for on a daily basis at the clinic. The most common complaint is “tennis elbow” , technically known as lateral epicondylitis.
This pain is located on the outside of the forearm just below the elbow. It’s often worse after playing tennis, pickleball, squash or daily activities like lifting a heavy pan or even turning a doorknob.
It’s caused by repetitive strain on the tendons and inflammation in the area.
To treat this there are a few rules to apply.
Treat it as soon as symptoms start, this can speed healing! Make an appointment with your physio to create a treatment plan for you.
Offload the area. Use ice and heat to relieve pain, LASER in the clinic, a topical anti-inflammatory like Voltaren can help, and a brace may be beneficial. Your physio can find the right brace for you.
Work on isometrics, gentle stretches and then eccentric loading to build resilience.
If the area is not responding using Shockwave might be an option.
